God: Faithful to a Thousand Generations
After many years as a stay-at-home mom and freelance writer, God called me back to teaching in the public schools. The first year back was difficult; many days I wondered if I had heard God’s call on my heart correctly. The sun would peak over the horizon every morning as I traveled through the country to a small rural town where I ministered to children, many who were hurting and broken.
Sometimes a pink bolt of light would shoot straight up into the sky announcing the new day with fanfare and exuberance.
Other days the horizon across frosted fields was hazy purple 360 degrees around, sleepy dawn still tucked under blankets of night.
On mysterious mornings, fog wisped in long strips across cornstalks or it would crystallize on every branch of tree.
Every unique, breathtaking sunrise reminded me that God’s mercies were new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23)
These morning drives were interludes with my Creator, intimate fellowship as I poured out my soul’s heartaches for my students, struggles with feelings of inadequacy in meeting their needs, and desire for him to bestow wisdom and creativity so that I could individually assist them to reach their full potential and purpose. God wrapped himself around me, whispered encouragements, and fortified me for the day’s purpose that he had designed.
At the end of each day, the sun set as I traveled home. Its end of the day symbolism reminded me that God had faithfully guided me just as he had promised.
Moment by moment, day by day, year by year, faithful to a thousandth generations to those who love him and keep his commandments is our everlasting God. (Deuteronomy 7:9)
